Last month, Tapanui West Otago Promotions chairman Horace McAuley said his organisation had sought recourse from the local community board and council to address issues with the former Tapanui Courier building in the town’s main street.
Mr McAuley said the building was in a state of dangerous disrepair, leading residents to become concerned about its appearance and safety.
West Otago Community Board chairwoman Barbara Hanna said the building’s Auckland owner, Richard Dean, had contacted her this week to offer assurances.
In an email to the Otago Daily Times, Mr Dean said he had scheduled repairs for the building this spring.
"We wanted to do this last two summers but Covid-19 limited the travel to do so each year.
"I did not realise the roadside of the building was causing an eyesore."
Mrs Hanna said the community would be delighted at the news.
"Lots of people have contacted [the board] about its appearance and safety, so we’re delighted Mr Dean will be addressing his responsibilities as its owner."
