On a bright and temperate Anzac Day, a squad of 17 players travelled to Bain Park for the opening fixture of the day, with Andrew Haulage Balclutha AFC taking on Southend United in a battle to retain the Challenge Cup.

Southend United have a history of being tough opponents for Clutha, and that proved to be the case once again.

Both sides tussled hard for possession throughout the first half, with the contest evenly balanced.

Balclutha worked the ball well up the field with some free-flowing passing, only to be caught on the counter-attack by Southend’s long balls over the top.

It was clear the first team to score would likely take control of the game, and Matt Simmonds stepped up early in the second half to break the deadlock.

Blake Mosley and Simmonds linked brilliantly up front, creating plenty of movement and dangerous breaks between the lines. They were unlucky not to add more goals to the tally.

Balclutha second came through a well-earned penalty, calmly converted by Simmonds to give the visitors breathing space.

Southend refused to go away quietly and pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining, floating an excellent strike from 25 yards over the goalkeeper and into the side netting to keep the game alive.

However, Balclutha held firm to secure an important 2-1 victory, and retain the Challenge Cup.

Man of the Match went to Simmonds for his excellent link-up play, composure in front of goal, and for driving his team to victory in an end-to-end contest.

A special thank you also goes to both referees for their efforts in managing a competitive and hard-fought match.

In the second game of the day Balclutha travelled to the new turf at Thomson Turnbull Park for a 5pm kick-off between Outback Welding and Engineering Balclutha AFC and Winton Football Club.

With little time between matches, the boys had to rush straight on to the field for kick-off but started strongly for the opening 20 minutes.

However, fatigue soon began to take its toll. The Balclutha boys became slightly complacent in their positional play, allowing a comfortable Winton side to take control and head into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Balclutha adjusted their formation at halftime to better deal with the number of Winton players committed forward. This left a bruised and battered Blake Mosley doing plenty of hard work up front on his own, battling relentlessly despite carrying an injury.

In another end-to-end contest, Balclutha gave as good as they got. Mosely pulled one back to make it 2-1, before Winton quickly responded just minutes later to restore their advantage and maintain control of the game.

Fresh legs arrived in the 60th minute, with Nathan Kenyon, Matt Simmonds, and Danny Simmonds entering the match. Kenyon, fresh off opening his season goal tally the previous week, made an immediate impact. He linked up well with Têkitângâ Mâtâng, who drove straight through the heart of the defence, rounded the keeper, and finished brilliantly.

Winton again responded to make it 4-2, but Têkitângâ produced a moment of brilliance shortly after. Controlling the ball beautifully from 25 yards out, he took it past a Winton midfielder before unleashing a thunderous strike into the back of the net — one of the goals of the day.

Despite the fightback, Winton had the final say, adding one more to close out the match 5-3.

Unfortunately, Winton proved just too much for the tiring Balclutha side to overcome, but the boys staged a valiant effort. Playing on the new turf was a fantastic opportunity, although the fast-paced surface made for an even tougher challenge for an already stretched squad of 17.

Man of the Match went to Têkitângâ Mâtâng for his outstanding attacking impact, two excellent goals, and his ability to change the momentum of the game with moments of real quality when Balclutha needed it most.

A big thank you to Winton for providing after-match food and drinks, especially given they also had to travel, and to the referees for officiating another competitive fixture.
