Alleged car thief arrested at Waihola petrol station

A man in a stolen car about to be spiked saved officers the trouble, after stopping at a South Otago service station where he was arrested, police say.

The stolen car was seen heading north in Balclutha, about 8.30am today, a spokeswoman said.

Officers followed the car as it continued to head north.

Road spikes were going to be deployed.

‘‘However, before that could happen, the driver (a 29-year-old man) stopped at a service station in Waihola and police took him into custody.’’

There were no details about the charges as of yet.

The stolen car would be returned to its owner, the spokeswoman said.
