Bridge strengthening work completed early

The Tahakopa bridge has reopened after being closed for strengthening for four weeks.

Clutha District Council service delivery group manager Jules Witt said the bridge was closed on May 15 and reopened yesterday, one week earlier than anticipated.

''It's certainly pleasing to have it open and it will reduce the disruption for the locals considerably.''

The bridge will have a 30km speed restriction in place until sealing work can be completed.

The sealing work is weather dependent and may not happen until the spring.

The Tahakopa bridge work was similar to that carried out on the Maclennan bridge.

In addition, Mr Witt said drivers could experience delays on the Ratanui bridge at the head of the Catlins estuary.

It was undergoing maintenance work.

Contractors are working on the bridge during working hours and there are speed restrictions in place.

However, as work progresses, drivers could experience delays of ''up to 30 minutes''.

''Please build that into your journey time just in case,'' Mr Witt said.

He anticipated the work would be completed by the end of the month.
