Cabin building set to begin

A proposed camping ground development at Beaumont is set to begin in the coming weeks, now that the summer holiday period has ended.

Beaumont Hotel owner Alison Mills announced plans to expand the camping and holiday park at the start of the year.

However, she was waiting for the summer period to end before work on the development could begin.

Ms Mills said she and her husband were also waiting on confirmation from the New Zealand Transport Agency on what its plans were for the replacement of the existing Beaumont Bridge.

NZTA engaged in public consultation on whether the existing state highway and planned new bridge should continue in front of Beaumont and the hotel or through the township and behind the hotel.

After feedback from the community, NZTA decided the new two-lane bridge over the Clutha River would be built just to the south of the existing bridge and State Highway 8 would remain in front of the hotel.

This fitted with Ms Mills' plans for the camping ground development.

She hoped to start as soon as possible.

''We're all set to go. We just need to get ourselves into the mindset.''

The first stage of the five-year plan was to build new cabins on the 1ha site behind the hotel.

The new cabins would add to existing cabins to form a 70-lot campground as well as amenities and ablution blocks.

The structure for three new cabins had already been paid for.

There were three cabins already at the hotel and the plan was to bring that number up to 10.

Resource consent had been obtained from the Clutha District Council for the project.

The planned project was in response to an increase in demand.

Numbers of forestry workers, hunters and Clutha Gold Trail riders staying at the hotel had increased, she said.

Ms Mills and her family bought the freehold title for the hotel a year ago, having leased it since 2010.
