Those summer holiday snaps around Clutha Country could be worth more than memories with hundreds of dollars up for grabs in a new photographic competition being launched early in the new year.

The Clutha District Council and its district development board have confirmed the launch of the 2009 Clutha Country photographic competition with total cash prizes of $700 offered in three categories.

The sections include Working in Clutha Country (machinery, labour, industry), Living in Clutha Country (the environment, landscape and scenic shots) and Playing in Clutha Country (action shots including fishing, walking and biking).

A cash first prize of $500 and $200 for runner-up will be offered in each category as well as a $1000 prize for the best portfolio which is a minimum of three photographs in each category.

District development manager Julie Pearse said the council and board provided a range of generic information about Clutha Country but it was time for some fresh images to be used in future publications and brochures.

Photographs submitted will be displayed on the Clutha Country and council websites and other council publications.

In a recent photographic contest, the council asked for photographs of people waving as part of the Clutha Country campaign.

Mrs Pearse said the new competition was more about showing off the district's scenic beauty and focusing on people going about their daily lives.

Entries open on January 12 and close on February 13.

While entries do not open until after the Christmas-New Year period, Mrs Pearse said now was the perfect time to begin snapping and trying to capture that elusive shot.

"We're really looking forward to seeing what the public comes up with and showcasing the end product to the rest of the world."
