Club to meet over fire loss

Balclutha Bowling Club members, still reeling from the fire which destroyed their clubrooms last weekend, will be briefed tomorrow night on their options.

Insurance assessors met club representatives on Monday to examine the scene of the Charlotte St fire which gutted the building and razed many irreplaceable items from its 126-year history.

Club secretary Roger Merrett said an insurance claim had been filed but it was too early to talk about how much money would be paid out or exactly what the club would do.

‘‘I would think everyone wants to rebuild but we just have to wait and see. Once we get all the information together, then we can talk about it.''

Some members had not yet been updated on what had happened and it was a courtesy to keep them fully informed, Mr Merrett said.

He did not know what, if any recommendations would come from this week's meeting but expected more meaningful information and debate at the club's annual meeting on May 22.

A preliminary investigation suggests an electrical fault caused the blaze.
