The idea for a community garden project in Balclutha,  planted in the minds of  residents over a year ago,  has finally "blossomed" in the past month.

Balclutha Community Garden president Robyn Bell said the  group had tried to get the project up and running for well over a year.

Finding land for a community maintained and owned garden was the biggest hurdle.

Secretary Beatrice Pratt said the group was "very lucky" Balclutha resident Colin Dempster "generously donated" land at his James St property to be used for the garden.

"We were searching and searching for land but we couldn’t find any," Mrs Pratt said.

Local businesses, contractors and organisations also offered services to help develop the garden.

"The contractors have been absolutely amazing."

It had really blossomed, Mrs Pratt said.

Ms Bell said compost, timber, money and labour were just some of the things offered to the group.

"People have  just been donating things left, right and centre and it’s been fantastic."

The garden was maintained by volunteers made up of a "little core group" but anyone was welcome to get involved, Ms Bell said.

Peas, beans, potatoes, cauliflowers, cabbages, broccoli, carrots, radishes, lettuces, zucchinis and parsnips had all been planted in the garden.

She expected the first harvest of vegetables would be given to charity groups, Ms Bell said.

It was intended to be a garden for the community, so anybody in need was welcome to become involved, she said.

The garden will be officially opened by Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan on Saturday, December 10.
