Contact hydro plans delayed

Power generator Contact Energy, which wants to revisit old proposals for up to four hydro-electric projects on the Clutha River, has delayed moves to publicly release its plans until early next month.

It had originally hoped to launch a website and release information by now but spokesman Jonathan Hill said that had been held up as Contact finalised all the details to be released to the public.

Late last month, Contact confirmed it wanted to talk to communities about revisiting old plans for dams at Luggate, Queensberry, Beaumont and Tuapeka Mouth.

Mr Hill said Contact would probably make an announcement, in early April about its campaign to talk to people in those areas who could be affected if Contact ever decided to push ahead with plans for dams on the river.

Contact has said it will use historic plans as a tool to gauge public opinion about hydro development along the river.

Detailed plans of all four projects, once mooted by Contact's predecessor, ECNZ (Electricity Corporation of New Zealand) will be posted on a website and the public will get its first chance in nearly 20 years to formally comment on the prospect of having more big dams built on the Clutha River.

Mr Hill said the company wanted to understand what people in those communities viewed as the impacts and benefits of any, or all, of the projects going ahead.

Contact has not committed to building any dams on the river but plans to spend the rest of this year gleaning public feedback.
