Council seeks potential project leaders

The Clutha District Council has taken a step towards making its plans for Balclutha a reality.

On Thursday, it discussed the scope and strategies for several proposals put to the community for feedback under its "Our Place" community plans.

Some of these included rejuvenating the Memorial Hall, improving walking and cycling paths within Balclutha, revitalising Naish Park and enhancing the Balclutha Centennial Pool and its surrounds.

The council included a list of "scope" for the plans, which detailed what it would consider when improving its assets.

Now the council is looking for community leaders to "stand up" and take charge of some of the projects. It agreed to support several of them but wanted them to remain community-driven.

Several ideas were removed from the scope and others, such as linking schools with a cycleway or walkway, were introduced.

There was some disagreement over extending Naish Park to connect to the Centennial Pool, but provision for it was included in the proposal outlines.

The council also discussed upgrading the appearance of the Balclutha Bridge for next year’s 150th anniversary since the first bridge in the town was opened.

Work on the bridge would have to be completed in association with the NZ Transport Agency as it was part of State Highway 1.

The council approved the scope and proposals for Balclutha’s community plans and agreed it would shoulder-tap people who could take charge of certain projects.
