This Anzac day was extra special for two Otago boys.

Cousins Seth and Jordan Rogan wore their ancestors' medals for the first time.

Jordan said he was happy to be wearing his great-great-grandfather's medals.

Dunedin man John Joseph Rogan landed at Gallipoli in 1915, and died there on May 2 that same year, during a night attack.

His brother, James Leo Vincent Rogan, also fought in World War 1 but did not join until much later. He survived and returned to Dunedin, before meeting his wife Fanny and moving to Milton.

James Rogan's grandson Keith Rogan, said other family medals were being mounted and hoped his grandchildren could wear them at next year's services.

"It's a good tradition. It's something that can go from generation to generation."
