The military theme of the Dunedin RSA Choir's annual Anzac Day Revue has been strengthened this year as the choir works to make the concert more reflective of the day.

The revue has been an Anzac Day event in the city since 1996.

But Lindsay McGavin, producer of this year's revue, said he and some other choir members felt the content had become too similar to the choir's other concerts.

This year the programme would have a predominantly military flavour, including a sketch based on characters from the television comedy Dad's Army and a medley of songs from another television comedy It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Mr McGavin said.

For the first time, songs had been selected covering wartime eras from World War 1 through to the Vietnam War, something Mr McGavin hoped would make the revue more relevant to younger service personnel.

Parts of the revue which have become traditional, such as the presentation of flags, the ceremony of remembrance, and the popular audience sing-along section, will also be repeated this year.

Among this year's guests will be piper Major Peter Amyes, executive officer of the 4th Otago and Southland Battalion based in Dunedin, who last year completed a six-month deployment in Afghanistan, and the Barock Choir from Otago Girls' and Otago Boys' high schools.

The choir usually holds its concerts in the Dunedin Town Hall but because that venue is closed for redevelopment the revue will be held on Anzac Day, April 25, in the Lion Foundation Arena at the Edgar Centre, at 6.30pm.

Profits will support the choir's three vocal scholarships awarded annually to young people studying at the University of Otago.
