Improved viewing areas, larger car parks and more toilets at and around Nugget Point are planned by the Department of Conservation (Doc), last week's annual meeting of Tourism Catlins heard.

Doc Otago coastal manager Robin Thomas was guest speaker at the meeting, attended by 35 people at Tahakopa.

Minutes from that meeting reveal Doc wants to work with the Clutha District Council on what he believes is a $60,000 project.

The Nugget Point site, on the southern coast past Kaka Point, attracts more than 60,000 visitors each year.

But Mr Thomas said the parking, viewing and toilet facilities were inadequate.

He outlined several key planned improvements including tiered viewing platforms at Roaring Bay with a curved roof profile.

The bus park area will be expanded with a three-stall toilet, and a new lookout point, barrier gate and signs.

Mr Thomas expected tenders for the work would be called within the next two months.

Doc has yet to formally address the council on its plans and no funding contribution has been allowed in its draft annual plan.
