The annual, 12-week tournament, organised by the Clutha Filipino Society is in it’s second year, and brought together seven teams from Clutha, Gore and Mosgiel.
In the final, championship match, Clutha Kings claimed the overall title with a well-rounded team effort and relentless determination, edging out Kanto Bots, also of Balclutha, in a thrilling 80-77 win for the championship trophy and $1000 cash prize.
The Kings’ Jethro Ariola earned the Most Valuable Player award. His leadership and key plays were instrumental in his team’s championship run.
In the battle for second runner-up, the Gore Mataderos fought with remarkable resilience and determination, refusing to back down against Balclutha’s Team Cluthania.
This was despite their significant disadvantage of a shorthanded squad with no substitutes.
Depth and consistency secured Cluthania’s 97-86 victory, with 10 assists and 11 rebounds, while Mataderos managed 9 assists and 12 rebounds in a hard-fought contest.
Recognising the top talents of the season, the league honoured Jethro Ariola, Kendrick Mamon, Xavier Lobaton, Rayween Villar and Ashton Navarosa as its "Mythical Five".
"We want to continue uniting Filipinos and Kiwis of all backgrounds in a celebration of skill, sportsmanship, and camaraderie," Clutha Filipino Society president Jovenal Cardinoza said.
"To strengthen community ties while showcasing the Filipino passion for basketball."
The Clutha Filipino Society is getting ready for an upcoming winter tournament and is planning on a bigger summer league tournament next year.
