It was a successful weekend for the travelling teams in the Southern Region Rugby competition, with all four away sides recording victories.

Clinton celebrated their 140th jubilee with a full day of age-grade rugby and community festivities, culminating in the Bill Mitchell Memorial Shield clash between Clinton and Owaka.

The visitors emerged with a 32-12 win after controlling much of the contest.

Playing into the wind in the first half, Owaka established early pressure and used a dominant set-piece to dictate territory and possession.

However, handling errors and poor decision-making prevented them from fully capitalising, with the visitors leading only 17-7 at halftime.

The second half followed a similar pattern, as Owaka scored early but failed to consistently apply pressure through lapses in intensity and individual play close to the line.

Clinton flanker Morgan Greer stood out in his 50th match for the club, while halfback George Anderson impressed throughout.

Owaka forwards Fionn Dineen and Logan Morrell were among the visitors’ best.

At Simpson Park, West Taieri produced a dominant second-half performance to defeat Lawrence 43-22 after trailing at halftime.

Lawrence played some of their best rugby of the season in the opening spell, using strong close-quarter carries, quick recycling and dangerous outside backs to trouble the competition frontrunners.

West Taieri started well but lost momentum after gaining an early advantage, allowing Lawrence to take a deserved 22-19 lead into the break.

But the visitors responded emphatically in the second half, with their superior fitness and work rate proving decisive as they stepped up to overpower the home side while securing another bonus-point victory.

Conor Lawson, Will Pringle, and Luke Moeke each scored doubles for West Taieri, while Dion Muir, Jake Lyders and Duncan McRae were among Lawrence’s top performers.

At Kaitangata, Toko reclaimed the Eddie Scott Memorial Trophy with a hard-fought win over Crescent.

The home side controlled much of the first half and led 21-12 at the break after dominating the breakdown and forcing turnovers through sustained attacking pressure.

Toko responded strongly after halftime, using a dominant lineout to wrest control of the match.

Captain Jared Hayes led by example with a hat-trick as the visitors surged ahead before holding out a late Crescent fightback to secure the trophy.

In Death Valley, Clutha Valley claimed the Trevor Peters Memorial Trophy with a 31-24 victory over Heriot in an entertaining encounter.

Valley made the ideal start, with midfielder Lachie Moore crossing twice early before Heriot settled into the game.

The home side responded well, with both teams producing expansive rugby and building pressure through multiple phases.

The match was locked at 24-24 at halftime after a high-quality opening spell.

Clutha Valley scored the only try of the second half shortly after the restart, but the remainder of the contest became a tense, error-filled battle as both sides struggled to maintain momentum.

Valley eventually held firm to secure an important victory and five valuable competition points.
