Evening to benefit helicopter trust

It is shaping up to be one of Lawrence's biggest nights out for some time and an event that will help thousands of people and perhaps even save lives.

The town is organising "an evening out with the stars" which will include a Stars in their Eyes format as well as entertainment from proven performers, Gold Guitar winners Aaron Jury and Colleen Hosking.

Event co-organiser Bill Bazley said support from the wider Lawrence community, with donations of prizes and food, meant the event was being run on a small budget freeing up more money for the evening's beneficiary - the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust.

The event will be held at Simpson Park on Saturday, June 14, from 8pm to 11pm.

Mr Bazley said most of the group tables had been sold, although there were still some spaces available.

Each table, seating 10 people, cost $1000.

The night will include performances by "celebrity" artists as well as the serving of food and refreshments by the Lawrence premier rugby team.

A mystery auction will also be held.

Mr Bazley said it was the first time such an event had been staged in Lawrence.

After covering costs, he hoped the evening would raise $15,000 for the trust, which provides rescue helicopter services in the province.
