The father-and-son pairing of Balclutha real estate agents Stewart and Jason Rutter has proved successful for them and their company, PGG Wrightson Ltd, after they were named as its third and fourth top-earners nationwide.

Both credit, in part, the booming dairy industry for their success.

Stewart Rutter has been selling farms for more than 30 years and he was joined by son Jason in 2000.

Stewart said the past 12 months had been a particularly good year for the pair, who work together as a team and sold about 60 farms in the year ending June 30, 2008.

"The number of South Otago farms converting to dairy has certainly helped us but this is not the only part of the country where that is occurring and we have also sold a large quantity of sheep and beef units," he said.

With more farms converting to dairy in Southland, he said the pair had sold properties to "cashed-up" farmers from there, looking to stay in pastoral farming, moving north and with the money to buy larger sheep and beef farms.

Stewart said he enjoyed being in partnership with his son and believed they made a good team.

"Experienced and younger people are a great combination."
