Clutha District Council (CDC) says it plans to replace the tumbledown fence leading to Balclutha’s historic bridge.

Steel and wire fencing between the road and pedestrian footpath at both ends of the bridge has been repaired several times following damage by passing traffic but the painted wooden rails are in decay.

"It looks terrible," a resident wrote in a letter to Clutha Leader

"It has been like this for a very long time ... council said they had fixed up the entrance to the bridge but they must have forgotten the other side."

Responding to the inquiry, CDC chief executive Steve Hill confirmed council was working with a fencing contractor on the design of a replacement fence.

"It has been identified that the Balclutha bridge fence needs to be replaced as much of the fence is past repairing. This was put on hold until the hub was completed," Mr Hill said.

"A replacement fence needs flood protection bylaw approval from the Otago Regional Council because of the proximity to the flood bank.

"We are planning to begin replacement of the fence over the next few months."

CDC’s long-term plan is expected to be available to the public in the coming weeks.
