An Owaka sports centre has been reopened after a $24,000 safety upgrade.

The Owaka Combined Sports Bodies' building was closed in March after it was found falling short of current fire regulations.

Owaka Combined Sports Bodies chairman Nathan Wilson said the building was used by the Owaka bowls, cricket, and rugby clubs, and was also where the Catlins Search and Rescue group held its meetings.

Mr Wilson said the group sought funding from community groups, and the project was completed in about three weeks, despite the building being closed since March.

The safety upgrade included a new fire escape, emergency lighting, smoke alarms, safety glass, and an emergency exit door, costing $24,000.

''Everything has to be up to standard, we're just waiting for it [the building] to be fully certified.''

The group received a $12,000 grant from the The Trusts Community Foundation (TTCF), and money from the Owaka Lions Club and the Catlins Community Company, with the difference made up by the Owaka rugby and bowls clubs.

Mr Wilson said the group was well-supported by Owaka builder Wayne Hollows and Kelly Chambers Electrical.

While the building was closed, the Owaka Rugby Club used the Owaka Memorial Community Centre and the Catlins Inn. They returned to their own building two weeks ago.

Other TTCF grants to South Otago: Clutha District Libraries, $599 (E.C. Read'n summer reading programme); South Otago Athletic Club Inc, $2711 (host the Clutha District Sports Awards in October); South Otago High School $1859 (football uniforms).
