The largest employer in the tiny South Otago town of Lawrence was recognised recently at an Australasian awards ceremony.

Tuapeka Gold Print was named the best New Zealand supplier in the promotional products category during the Australasian Promotional Products Association (APPA) awards, held in Sydney last month.

The company employs about 70 people, which is almost one-fifth of the town's population.

Company director Jim Robertson said Tuapeka Gold Print last won the award about six years ago and put this year's win down to "huge improvements" in service to distributors.

Each year, the APPA sends out a questionnaire to distributors, who then vote for the best supplier.

Tuapeka Gold Print was competing against about 70 other suppliers, Mr Robertson said.

"It's always good when your customers acknowledge you."

The team had invested much time and effort in the past 12 months streamlining their systems and services, and constantly made improvements.

Mr Robertson said the award was recognition of the tremendous effort his staff put into the business.

"It's nice for them to get some reward, because they are the ones who make it happen."
