Skips funded by the Clutha District Council will be put in place at some South Otago holiday spots this Christmas season, but may not reappear next year.

The district assets committee recommends all transfer stations and skip sites under the new waste management contract - which comes into effect next April - should be reviewed after 12 months.

The committee also recommended existing free skips at Toko Mouth and Jacks Bay should stay in place over the holidays but should be reviewed and funding options investigated.

The annual cost of skips at Toko Mouth and Jacks Bay is $840 and $470 respectively.

Bruce ward councillor Gaynor Finch said the skip had been working well at Toko Mouth, and was appreciated there. Catlins ward councillor Hilary McNab said the trial skip at Jacks Bay had been good, but Catlins residents sought a skip at Owaka as tourists visiting the area often stopped at the township and offloaded large amounts of rubbish at the few bins available.

Crs Finch and McNab were opposed to the review of the skips at Toko Mouth and Jacks Bay.

• Council staff said they had received positive feedback following the temporary closure of Ryrie St in Balclutha. Cr Hamish Anderson said he had tested the James-Clyde Sts intersection and felt "a lot safer" as he no longer had to worry about other vehicles "barrelling" through from Ryrie St.

A temporary barrier was put in place on Wednesday.

The barrier will remain in place until the end of January and traffic flows around the area will be monitored by council staff. At the end of the trial, the council will decide whether to make the intersection change permanent.
