Culture was celebrated through food last week in Balclutha, and a group of people aimed to help a cause by getting involved.

Members of the Clutha Filipino Society Incorporated attended the Clutha district Culture Feast to raise funds for Davao City in the Philippines.

Group member Jovenal Cardinoza said the culture feast was a great way to meet people in the area, while also contributing to a good cause.

"We want to help make a difference from where we are," he said.

Flooding and landslips were destroying the homes of Davao families and the group wanted to help where they could while experiencing the joys of the feast.

The Clutha district Culture Feast was held in the Balclutha Cross Recreation Centre last Friday.

More than 600 people visited the area to meet and eat with people of various cultures and meet new people.

Clutha district residents set up food stalls, an entertainment section and children’s activities for all of the family to enjoy.

Residents with ethnic backgrounds including Indian, Filipino, Dutch, Fijian and more were serving classic staples from their home countries to share with visitors from in and out of the district.

Clutha District Settlement Support chairwoman Ella Broekhuizen said the atmosphere was "fantastic".

"We had a great turnout and a good mixture of cultures."

"It is a great way to connect locals with new migrants and people of other cultures who have been here for a long time.

"There are many people of diverse cultures, which some people don’t realise.

"The overall event was great for all involved."

The event was MC’d by Labour Party local MP Ingrid Leary, who said the district was "lucky".

"We are very lucky to have a richly diverse community in the Clutha district," she said.

"This event is a fantastic way to celebrate our cultures in the area and to meet people from all walks of life."
