Lawrence's blooming daffodils are at it again.

The sprawling daffodil field at Wetherstons, near the township, has been transformed from a dull green to bright yellow, as thousands of plants begin blooming.

For the self-proclaimed guardian of the daffodils, Kim "Dusty" Murtagh, the timing could not be better.

The fields are open to the public from Saturday, and the celebration of spring culminates with the Daffodil Dayze Gala on Sunday, October 5.

The fields are on the same site as the former Black Horse Brewery, which was started by the Hart family, and all money raised from the gala will go towards restoring the site as a tourist attraction.

Already much of the land has been cleared and daffodils have begun sprouting almost as far as the eye can see.

This spring is an exciting time for other reasons, too.

The Hart's Daffodil Charitable Trust was formed to care for the site and it recently secured funding from the Community Trust of Otago so a worker can be employed for 30 hours a week to continue clearing the site for the next six months.

In its heyday, the brewery rose to become Otago's most successful provincial brewery.

"In forming this trust, we hope to share a town that has an incredible past and a golden future with the many travellers who pass through, encouraging them to take a longer look at a crucial part of this country's history," Ms Murtagh said.

At the gala, people will be able to buy bunches of daffodils, taste traditional food, listen to traditional music and buy souvenirs of the occasion.

Ms Murtagh and some girlfriends will add to the atmosphere by dressing up as showgirls.

Other entertainment will include banjo player Paul Kimble and performer Ewi Mihaka.
