Her nominator highlighted her generosity with time and transport, especially for the elderly, and her enthusiasm for myriad causes.
Ms Ryder said she looked back on her 15 years with Hato Hone St John and 25 years each with the Salvation Army and Balclutha Women’s Institute as "something she grew up with."
"My parents were busy but they did all they could for committees, clubs and groups," she said.
"I’m so glad they did, because as I’ve just carried it on, the friends and lovely feeling you get from being there for your community came naturally."
