A logging truck's trailer which detached and overturned narrowly avoided colliding with a school bus carrying children on Old Port Rd, near Warepa School, yesterday morning.

The trailer spewed its load of logs across a paddock near the school.

Constable Rochelle Gordon, of Balclutha, said the truck was heading for Balclutha about 8.45am when the accident happened on the corner outside the school. The driver of a school bus heading in the opposite direction just managed to avoid the truck, trailer and logs.

Warepa School principal Sue Adcock said she had spoken to the driver, who was left shaken by the incident.

Const Gordon said the sole occupant of the truck, a man in his 40s from Owaka, was uninjured. The Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit was investigating.

A representative of Young Partnership Ltd, which owned the truck, declined to comment.
