Passing lane north of Balclutha proposed

A new passing lane could be built on a stretch of state highway north of Balclutha which has a history of road crashes.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is investigating a northbound passing lane on State Highway 1 and has sent preliminary plans to the Clutha District Council.

Details of the proposed development are included in the district assets committee agenda for next week.

A consultant's letter to the council said several crashes had been reported and primarily, the road alignment and "lack of passing opportunities" north of Balclutha were key.

The investigation will look at three options, including realigning the state highway by easing the curves, constructing a 1km passing lane and installing a right-turn bay at the Stirling Rd intersection.

Meanwhile, a series of roading projects in Clutha, including sealing the Nuggets road, is in the pipeline.

Bridge strengthening and renewals, including for the Beaumont bridge, will be carried out in the next three years.

Clutha townships and new footpaths are also on the agenda.
