Veteran fundraisers  Karen Roughan (left), Elaine Crawford and Wendy Dougherty showed their support for the month-long Pink Ribbon Breakfast fundraising campaign at an event in Lawrence on Saturday.

People in the South Otago town joined thousands of others across the country this month to host fundraising breakfasts for breast cancer research.

Supporters seeking a cuppa and a muffin queued early outside the 26 on Ross restaurant on Lawrence’s main street to help provide financial aid for breast cancer research and patient support on Saturday.

A steady crowd of locals and visitors adorned with pink ribbons filed through the cafe ordering meals and taking their chances in the large number of raffles on offer.

By the time the event finished at 10am, a total of $1274.36 had been raised. The trio have been conducting fundraising events in Lawrence for the past 30 years.

They have supported many different community events and organisations, including the popular old bags’ nights, girls’ night-out parties, garden tours, mystery meal guests and appeals for second-hand bras.

Co-organiser Karen Roughan said they were always amazed at the strong support  from local people  for their events.

‘‘The town always comes together to help us and raise funds; it’s so nice what they do.

‘‘Just look at this morning - they were queuing up outside the cafe before we even opened at 7am.’’
