Playground approved

The Owaka playground will be replaced  later this year if all goes according to plan.

The Owaka Lions Group have been given approval by the Clutha District Council to go ahead with fundraising for a new $43,500 Timberlay playground in the main street of Owaka.

Group president Andrew Keen said the current playground was getting old and needed to be replaced.

"The old one has been there for a fair amount of years."

Other parts of the town had been upgraded and the Lions wanted to "tidy the playground up" with the rest of Owaka.

The group had begun fundraising and hoped to have the new playground built before winter.

The Clutha District Service Delivery Committee met last week and discussed the request for the new playground in the Operations Update report.

The council has written to the Lions Club, approving its  request to install the new equipment at the playground.

At the committee meeting, Cr Bruce Graham said the proposed play area was "pretty impressive".

Cr Geoff Blackmore "took his hat off" to the Owaka Lions Group.

He also asked what the council could do to support the Lions or provide financial assistance to the group.

"Surely the council must have something  ... we can put forward as well."

Council service delivery group manager Jules Witt there was a possibility the council would be able to support the group’s plans in the future.

It would have to investigate whether it was able to provide ground-bark for the playground or something else.
