An open day will be held on Saturday for viewing progress on the Balclutha Centennial Pool upgrade.

Clutha District Council corporate services manager Alan Dickson said the $3.49 million upgrade project was nearing its final stages.

The pool was initially expected to reopen in January but delays have delayed the opening date until the end of May.

Mr Dickson said weather conditions and the delayed delivery of tiles from Italy had held up progress.

"The new roof is now on and remaining interior work is well under way. We want the public to come along to the open day and see the good progress which has been made to date."

The open day access will be for two hours only, from 10am to 12pm.

The upgrade was designed to bring the pool up to modern standards and includes the replacement of the old asbestos roof and walls, upgraded changing rooms, renewal of the heating and ventilation system, and an upgraded pool entrance.
