Clutha Recreation Centre Inc has won top honours at the 2012 TrustPower Clutha District community awards, presented last night, in Balclutha.

About 100 people attended the awards ceremony at the Rosebank Lodge.

As supreme winner, the committee received $1500, a framed certificate, and a trophy, and will represent the district at the 2012 TrustPower National Community Awards in the Far North district next March.

The committee was behind the Cross Recreation Centre in Balclutha and worked to create the multisport facility.

Clutha Recreation Centre Inc chairman Jeff Seymour said it was very exciting to receive the supreme award.

"We're pretty humble about all of this. A group of forward-thinking people got this together.

"We're very proud."

TrustPower community relations representative Jess Somerville said the construction of the centre was a great example of what a community could achieve.

Tony Johnston, of Blue Mountain College, and Nadia McDonnell, of Tokomairiro High School, were named winners of the TrustPower Clutha Youth Community Spirit Award.

Miss Somerville said this was the first time joint winners had been chosen in the Clutha district.

The award, run in conjunction with the TrustPower Clutha District Community Awards, recognises secondary school pupils' service to the school and the community and is run in partnership with the Clutha District Council.

Competition for this year's awards was strong and a record 44 groups were entered.
