Balclutha's premier sports facility is getting ready to celebrate its fifth birthday with an open day this weekend.

The Cross Recreation Centre is still going strong with usage increasing and numbers rising.

The centre boasts a gym facility, indoor courts and specialised physio and training facilities.

Recreation manager Penny Batchelor has been with the centre since it opened in November 2011, and said she could not have anticipated the number of people who had used it in that time.

Mrs Batchelor has timed the celebrations to coincide with the ''Pedal for Hope'' charity event starting at 6am on Saturday. Competitors will cycle for 12 hours in the centre's gym to raise money for cancer awareness.

Activities planned for the open day include hockey, basketball, tug-of-war, gymnastic displays and scooter racing, and all are built around what the centre offers normally.

Mrs Batchelor was excited about the launch of ''zorb soccer'' for which the centre has bought giant zorb balls.

She wanted as many people as possible to come along this weekend.

''I just want Saturday to be a party and for people to have fun.''

The celebrations start at 10am and end at 2pm.
