Seniors raise funds, buy their own bus

Clinton's senior citizens have not let the recent closure of shops and services put them off. And to prove their point, they raised about $20,000.

The local senior citizens club this week took possession of its new 24-seater coach, which will be used to take members around the township and beyond.

Clinton Seniors treasurer Barbara Blair said the 35 members decided to raise funds for the new vehicle after the town suffered several cutbacks.

It lost its Post Office, its only supermarket, and its bus company.

The town's service station also recently closed its doors.

Mrs Blair said the cost of using outside buses was seen as a deterrent to future trips, so the group took matters into its own hands.

It intends using the bus as a "shopping basket" for trips to Gore or Balclutha.

Donations from community groups helped buy the vehicle.

Mrs Blair said the club was "truly amazed" at the generosity of the community.

This included several substantial donations by individuals with ties to Clinton.

"All in all, this has been a major project but well worth the time and effort.

"It just shows what can be done when a small community sees a need and acts on it."
