A South Otago family has had a rough start to Christmas after their home was targeted by thieves.

When Clydevale man Joel Walker woke up at 3am yesterday and saw the lights in his house were on, he did not think much of it.

"I switched them off. I thought I might have been sleepwalking or something."

But when he got up again at 7am, he realised his house had been ransacked.

Thieves had taken his TV, Xbox, and other valuables.

They had also taken his car, which was later found crashed into a bush.

The Christmas presents for his children which had been in the boot of the car were still there and intact.

He had car insurance, but no insurance for the contents of his house.

Mr Walker had considered Clydevale to be a safe community, the kind of rural area where people left their doors unlocked and the keys in their cars.

Not any more.

"I’m actually thinking about moving," he said.

The incident had been reported to police.
