Patrons had to brave cold wind at the 145th South Otago A and P Show in Balclutha on Saturday.

It had a slightly different layout this year, making use of the Cross Recreation Centre to house vintage cars and craft stalls. "Tractor dancing", dog trialling and sheep shearing demonstrations, as well as woodchopping competitions ran throughout the day in addition to the usual judging of animals and sideshow entertainment.

Brian Gutsell, of Gore, has been taking part in woodchopping competitions at the show for many years. His relatives owned a sawmill in the Catlins and were involved in setting up woodchopping as a sport in New Zealand.

He now competes around the country following in his grandparents' and uncles' footsteps. Several sons are also involved. Mr Gutsell said Cromwell teen Brad Pako was very talented, with the potential to be one of New Zealand's best.

The show concluded late afternoon with the grand parade and tractor dancing.
