Spate of graffiti upsetting, principal says

The principal of Kaitangata Primary School says a recent  spate of graffiti around the town, including at the school, is upsetting.

The school is one of three buildings tagged with spray paint in the past few days.

Principal Anneta Payne said  the damage occurred between  5pm and 8pm on Tuesday.

While she was disappointed to find the graffiti, she was relieved it was not a personal attack on the school. The Kaitangata community hall and swimming pool were both also spray-painted with the same "indecipherable" graffiti. It was clear somebody was just looking for places to tag, she said. This sort of behaviour was unusual in Kaitangata, Mrs Payne said.

"The sad thing is we haven’t had vandalism here at school for the last couple of years and it’s a little bit out of the blue."

She hoped whoever vandalised the buildings in the town was just passing through and would "carry on going". The school security cameras did not capture anyone and the school would be increasing the number of cameras it had in response.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said reports had been filed  about the vandalism and inquiries were continuing. Police were also interested in any information on three recent cases of arson where armchairs were set on fire at the Balclutha showgrounds, primary school and athletics club in the past week. It was unclear where the armchairs came from. Two of the chairs were the same but the third, set on fire at the athletics club, was different and "distinctive".
