Stolen car sought

Police are looking for a young man believed to have stolen a rental car from Christchurch and who evaded police after a brief chase near Balclutha yesterday.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said the driver had failed to pay for petrol at Waihola Motors.

Milton police spotted the car and pursued it south but lost it after it passed a truck on a double yellow line just north of Balclutha.

Sgt Bull said police were looking for a dark silver Mazda Familia car, registration YB 4395, driven by a tall man aged between 18 and 20 years, with red hair. He was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone who sees either the man or the vehicle is asked to contact Balclutha police.
