Support for pool working party

A meeting in Lawrence this week unanimously supported a move to investigate building a swimming pool in a new location in the town.

The Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board organised the meeting so local people could be briefed on the long-term future of the existing pool, which the Clutha District Council estimates may need more than $300,000 spent on it over the next few years.

The meeting, which was attended by about 30 people, supported calls for a working party to be set up to urgently investigate a custom-built facility.

Any new pool is likely to be built closer to the Lawrence Area School and Simpson Park area.

• Meanwhile, Kaitangata people are being invited to a meeting next Thursday to discuss the future of their community swimming pool.

The meeting, to be held at the Kaitangata Town Hall at 7.30pm, will outline how the community may be able to consider taking over the running of the covered pool and other options for the future.
