They sang, they danced, and they acted - South Otago's finest talent took to the stage in Owaka for Catlins Got Talent on Saturday.

The sellout event, which drew a crowd of 240, featured 13 acts ranging from a cappella solos to comedy skits and glowing dances.

A group from the Owaka Playcentre, dubbed ''Yummy Mummys Glow Crazy'' won the competition with an energetic dance routine performed by women dressed in glowing skeleton suits, much to the delight of the audience.

Former Catlins Area School pupil Holly McPhee tied for second place with male group ''The Old Crow Medicine''.

The Owaka Lions Club was named people's choice with their skit inspired by the television comedy Mrs Brown's Boys which left the audience howling with laughter.

The event began in 2010 to help raise funds to heat the Owaka swimming pool. Since 2011 the pool has been heated.

Organiser Kim Dodds said the competition was first held four years ago, but this year's event drew the biggest number of acts and the largest crowd, selling out for the first time.

''It's a great community event and it's good to have such community support for both Catlins Got Talent and our pool.''

Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan, Balclutha real estate agent and former Catlins woman Adraian Stott and Tawanui personality ''Mack'' McIntosh judged the 13 acts.

The competition was followed by an auction. Both events were expected to raise about $12,000.

Money from the events goes towards running costs associated with the swimming pool.

The event received $2500 from the Trusts Community Foundation for sound and lighting.

Mrs Dodds said the profile of swimming and the pool itself had become strong within the community, helping to achieve an increase in patronage.

Improvements and maintenance of the facility were ongoing.

There were plans to replace the front doors, improve the natural lighting into the changing rooms, and possibly install a starting block.
