Teenagers fined for drinking in public

Balclutha police issued five South Otago youths with $200 fines early on Sunday.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said four youths in Balclutha and one in Owaka received $200 infringement notices for drinking in a public place.

Three were aged 17 and two were 16, Sgt Bull said.

• The 22-year-old male driver of a car involved in an accident on Lewin St, Balclutha, on Saturday April 17, has been charged with dangerous driving causing injury.

Police are still waiting on the results of a blood-alcohol test.

• A 31-year-old Christchurch man has been charged with drink-driving, driving while disqualified and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, after being chased and pinned down by the 58-year-old Balclutha man whose car he allegedly stole.

Sgt Bull said the owner spotted his car at 7.30am on Saturday on Essex St, Balclutha, with the alleged offender still in it.

The Balclutha man called the police and gave chase.
