Tokoiti sewerage discussed

Questions about Tokoiti's sewage woes were described as "desperate cries" by one resident at a community meeting in Tokoiti last night.

About 20 Tokoiti residents attended the meeting at the Tokoiti School hall to discuss the Tokoiti sewerage proposal and to create a committee.

Resident Lynn Smart said cost remained the main issue.

Vanessa Robertson-Briggs raised concerns about the number of properties that would be involved in the sewerage system, as the council's estimates were based on 30 connections over 28 properties.

Two properties were eligible to connect directly to the Milton sewerage system and would have until the end of the year to do so at a cheaper cost, or become part of the Tokoiti project.

Six Tokoiti residents and a member of the school board of trustees were elected to the community committee. Clutha district councillors Bruce Vollweiler and Gaynor Finch will represent the council on the committee.

Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan said Tokoiti's sewerage system "is going to happen". The funding options were not "locked and loaded" and would be open to community consultation.

The council's preferred funding option would have each Tokoiti ratepayer pay a sewerage rate of $1018. Other Clutha townships' sewerage rates would also rise, at different levels.

The council favours a gravity-based system but that is subject to community consultation.

Twenty-four submissions on the sewerage proposal were made to the council's annual plan hearings earlier this year.
