Jake (8) and Brianna (5) Stanger put up the Clutha District RSA's tribute to Balclutha soldiers killed 100 years ago at the battle of Passchendaele, where in 270 minutes, 846 New Zealanders were killed and more than 2000 wounded.

The Clutha District RSA put up the 22 crosses at the rose garden next to the Balclutha War Memorial Hall on Sunday.

Clutha District RSA secretary treasurer Pauline Soper said 11 of those recognised by the crosses died on the day at Passchendaele.

The crosses will remain for two weeks.

The public was also welcome to view the display of photos and information on the soldiers at the RSA.

The RSA was asking for people to make poppies to lay among the crosses.

Mrs Soper thanked those who had contributed so far, especially the local branch of the Red Cross.
