Two win health scholarships

Two Clutha district school pupils have been awarded the inaugural Clutha health scholarships.

Jessica Higgison, of Lawrence, and Katie Ward, of Balclutha, will receive their awards at the Clutha Health First 10th anniversary dinner.

The dinner will be held on Friday.

The awards are worth up to $5000 each.

They are designed to help cover costs of studying health-related courses at tertiary level.

Jessica Higgison plans to study health sciences and then medicine at Otago University.

Katie Ward will study speech language therapy at Canterbury University.

During their studies, both women will report back to the Clutha Health Incorporated board.

The health body initiated the scholarships to encourage young Clutha people to consider careers in the health sector.

It hopes to make the scholarships an annual fixture.

Applications for the 2010 scholarships will be called in the middle of next year.
