Weekend grass kart champs for family fun

The roar of grass karts will be heard near Milton over the next two days.

More than 120 kart enthusiasts from all over the South Island will converge on a large paddock north of the town for the South Island grass kart championships.

Spokesman Brian Griffin said the first races start at 10am today, and involve three rounds of 13 classes, from midgets to seniors.

Racers as young as six and older than 60 will compete today and tomorrow.

"It's a whole heap of family fun."

The public can watch the racing from the sidelines of the paddock.

Racers negotiate a weaving course laid out in tyres.

Mr Griffin said access is by State Highway 1, and the site was 2km north of Milton.
