Women's week recycles its image

Recycling is a buzz word right now and it will take a prominent place at this year's Clutha District Week for Women promotion.

Previously known as Rural Women's Week, the event - celebrating its 10th year - has also undergone a transformation of sorts, according to event coordinator Heather Paterson, who is excited about the changes for 2008 and what they will offer the women of the South.

Well-known businesswoman and celebrity Suzanne Paul will speak at a function at the Balclutha War Memorial Hall on May 17 and her presence was expected to be a major drawcard and great start to the week, Mrs Paterson said.

‘‘Suzanne is sure to be an enthralling speaker, having experienced not only the highs and lows of business, but the life of a celebrity as well.''

Popular past events like the Be You days and master barbecue classes will return, while a new feature this year will be a wearable arts show preceded by a creative arts weekend, to be held on March 15 and 16.

This weekend will feature classes on body art and wearable art, and serve to give inspiration and ideas for those wanting to create something for the May wearable art event.

Events during the Clutha Week for Women will be held in Balclutha, Milton, Tapanui, Stirling and Kaka Point.

‘‘While the focus of events are mainly for women, a number of them will appeal to the men of the area,'' Mrs Paterson said.

She encouraged anyone interested in any events to return their booking forms promptly after they were mailed out in the weeks before the event.

Clutha's Week for Women will run from May 17 to 28.
