After a hiatus of two years, more than 1000 people attended the return of the Southland Rodeo to Invercargill at the weekend.

The last event was held at Sandy Point in 2020, but since then it had to be cancelled because of Covid-19.

Invercargill resident Serena Lang said it was great to have it back in their backyard.

"There were some rodeos in other regions, but we were missing something like this here.

"It is a great family event with a relaxed atmosphere."

Passionate about horses and motorbikes, she had to choose between the last day of the Burt Munro Challenge and the rodeo.

"Well, I am a biker but I am here — as you can see ... My partner is racing there but I could not miss this one here."

Barrel racing competitors Piper Sarginson, of Wanaka, Paris Wilson, of Lawrence, Sky Sanders, of Alexandra, and Lexie Nisbett, of Nelson, were happy with the crowd.

"It is great to be back in the deep South as usually Southland people are really supportive," Piper said.

Southland Rodeo Association committee member Annette Chalmers said about 1500 attended the event.

There were 177 entries and a full day of events, which included split bull riding, novice steer riding and barrel racing.

"We are having a great turnout and the weather is very good.

"A lot of families came to make the most of the day."
