Barrel racing competitors Piper Sarginson, of Wanaka, Paris Wilson, of Lawrence, Sky Sanders, of Alexandra, and Lexie Nisbett, of Nelson, were happy with the crowd.
"It is great to be back in the deep South as usually Southland people are really supportive," Piper said.
Southland Rodeo Association committee member Annette Chalmers said about 1500 attended the event.
There were 177 entries and a full day of events, which included split bull riding, novice steer riding and barrel racing.
"We are having a great turnout and the weather is very good.
"A lot of families came to make the most of the day."
