A bleeding teenage boy was taken to hospital after a fight closed Burger King in Invercargill last night, police say.

Police were called to the outlet  on the corner of Elles Rd and Tay St just after 5.30pm after receiving a report of two groups were fighting outside.

The first officers at the scene discovered ‘‘a lot of blood’’ in a toilet on the premises and closed the restaurant.

Police were interviewing several children and their guardians "at the scene and at the station", a spokeswoman  said.

A St John spokeswoman said a boy with moderate injuries was taken by ambulance from the restaurant to Southland Hospital.

The restaurant manager, who did not want to be named, said the restaurant reopened about 7pm.
