The new Labour candidate for the Southland electorate wants to bring "a different perspective to politics".

Victoria University software engineering senior lecturer Dr Simon McCallum was selected by the party as its candidate for the Southland electorate in this year’s general election.

Dr McCallum (48) is a specialist in artificial intelligence, virtual reality and games.

He believed his autism could bring "a different perspective to politics", he said.

He lives in Mosgiel and works remotely and at the Wellington campus.

He is married and has two children.

He will launch his campaign at an event at the Rees in Queenstown on Saturday night.

Former prime minister Helen Clark will attend.
