A fatal caravan fire in Southland early yesterday appears to have been caused by an electrical appliance, police say.
The caravan, which was parked in a paddock at a property on Hunter St in Edendale, was fully ablaze when fire services arrived about 3am yesterday, Sergeant Wing-Wah Ng, of Invercargill said.
Once the fire had been extinguished, firefighters found a man's body inside.
The body could not be identified visually and would be undergoing further examination to determine the man's identity, Sgt Ng said.
People in the area had known a man was staying in the caravan.
Fire safety investigators were at the scene yesterday and early indications were that the fire was not suspicious, Sgt Ng said.
The caravan was badly damaged.
The man's death had been referred to the coroner.
