Gore resident Len Ross proudly displays the grapefruit growing at his Te Anau holiday home.
Len and Shona Ross have grown lush lemon and grapefruit trees laden nearly all year round with fruit.
But there is one catch - the couple are not growing them in their Gore garden but at their Te Anau holiday home.
Mr Ross said they had unsuccessfully tried growing citrus fruit in Gore.
There were sceptics when the couple planted lemons and grapefruit in Te Anau about three years ago.
However, the couple had triumphed over the weather.
‘‘When the neighbours come around they can't believe their eyes,'' Mr Ross said.
When the couple visit Te Anau they bring back a supply of lemons and grapefruit to Gore.
‘‘I've got lemons for the gin,'' Mr Ross said.
