The man accused of murdering a young father in Invercargill will keep his identity secret until at least next month.

The 26-year-old Invercargill man appeared before Judge Mark Callaghan in the Invercargill District Court via audiovisual link from the local police station yesterday.

He is charged with murdering Chad Parekura and attempting to murder another man on April 23.

Police were alerted to the double-stabbing, near the courthouse in Don St, just before 12.45am on Saturday and found Mr Parekura unconscious. He died at the scene.

The other victim was transported to Southland Hospital with critical injuries.

The defendant was arrested in Invercargill on Monday.

Yesterday, counsel Scott Williamson opposed media applications to take the man’s photo.

He also sought interim name suppression to allow a psychological report to be completed and made no application for bail.

Mr Williamson also sought the court’s permission for him to visit the defendant in custody.

Judge Callaghan remanded the man without plea to appear in the High Court at Invercargill on May 17 and suppressed his name.

The judge also declined photography applications because police were continuing with their inquiries, he said.
